The mixtape attracted the attention of independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment, the label Kendrick would go on to release four studio albums with. The Compton native’s steady rise to the top began as many aspiring rappers’ do: with a release of a mixtape at the age of 16, that drew influences from Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z and Nas.
